The Western Regional Office of the Forestry Commission (FC) has officially launched the 2026 Tree for Life (T4L) Reforestation Initiative with a commemorative tree-planting exercise at the Essikado Chief’s Palace in the Western Region.
The event was organised in partnership with Karpowership Ghana, Takoradi, attracted several distinguished personalities, including the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson; the Ag. Deputy Chief Executive of FC, Mr. Elikem Kotoko; the Paramount Chief of Essikado and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kobina Nketsia V; the Western Regional Manager of the Forest Services Division (FSD), Nana Poku Bosompim; the Operations Director of the Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD), Mr. Mawuli Doe; staff of Karpowership Ghana,traditional leaders, queen mothers, school children, members of the media, among other stakeholders.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Mr. Elikem Kotoko highlighted the significance of the T4L Initiative, emphasising its role in promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change. He urged the gathering not only to plant trees but also nurture them to maturity to ensure their survival and long-term environmental benefits.
Mr. Kotoko further commended Karpowership Ghana for its collaboration and support in promoting environmental conservation through the joint initiative.
Addressing the gathering on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Hon. Joseph Nelson underscored the importance of tree planting as a civic responsibility. He encouraged citizens to make tree planting a regular habit, noting the numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits trees provide.
The Regional Minister also called on stakeholders, non-governmental organizations, institutions, and communities to unite in the fight against illegal mining and logging, stressing the need to protect Ghana’s forests for future generations. He reaffirmed his commitment to making the Western Region the leading region in environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
In his address, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, who also served as the Chairman of the day’s events, expressed appreciation to both the Forestry Commission and Karpowership Ghana for putting together such a program of such importance. He emphasised the need to cultivate a culture of tree planting among young people, encouraging teachers to integrate environmental consciousness into everyday learning activities.
The Paramount Chief further highlighted the importance of creating employment opportunities through the maintenance and management of tree nurseries and seedling production sites, noting that such initiatives can contribute significantly to community development and environmental protection.
The Western Regional Manager of the Forest Services Division, Nana Poku Bosompim, provided an exhibition of the various tree species available for planting and their suitability for different environments. The seedlings were distributed which included shade trees, ornamental species, timber , and several indigenous species aimed at restoring and enhancing Ghana’s forest landscape.
A major highlight of the event was a drama and poetry performance by pupils of Essikado Methodist Primary School which focused on environmental conservation and the importance of tree planting. One of the most memorable messages from their presentation was the inspiring quote saying, “He who plants a tree plants hope”.
The programme concluded with a ceremonial tree-planting exercise, group photographs, and a funfair celebration, bringing to a close a successful and impactful event that reinforced the collective commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the Western Region
